First-Semester Placement Information

Certain courses require tests prior to registration. Depending on your standardized test scores and/or your academic major, you may need to take a test to be placed into the appropriate English, math, reading, and/or chemistry course(s). See the information on the tests below to determine if there is a test you need to take prior to Student Orientation or registration.

English, Math, and Reading Placement

Placement into college level English, math, and reading courses is determined by standardized test scores or the ACCUPLACER test. Acceptable test scores cannot be more than three years old. The ACCUPLACER score(s) are used by your advisor to guide you in English, reading and/or math course selection.

  • If your ACT, SAT, GED, HiSET or TASC scores are at or above the following, you are exempt from the test.
    • ACT: Math-19, English-18, Reading-17
    • SAT 2015 or Before: Math-460, Verbal-430
    • SAT 2016 or After: Math-500, Verbal-470
    • GED: Mathematics-165, Reasoning Language Arts-165, Social Studies-165
    • HiSET: Math-15, Writing-15, Reading-15
    • TASC: Math-560, Writing-560 plus writing essay-6, Reading-580
  • If you are not exempt, the ACCUPLACER test must be completed prior to registration for classes.

Proctored/Offsite Tests

The ACCUPLACER, Chemistry Placement, and Engineering Advanced Math Placement tests may be taken in your hometown.

If you live in Colorado, you may contact a local community college and take the ACCUPLACER at their testing center and have your scores forwarded directly to CMU. If that is not convenient, you may take our ACCUPLACER offsite with an approved proctor, at a testing center near you, or at home with a live B-Virtual webcam proctor.

The Chemistry Placement and Engineering Advanced Placement tests may be taken offsite with an approved proctor or at a testing center near you.

Please visit www.coloradomesa.edu/testing for more information about each of these options.
