Required Content Testing

In accordance with our goal of providing teachers who are competent in subject matter, the Colorado Mesa University Center for Teacher Education (CTE) requires content testing prior to admission to the teacher education program and prior to beginning student teaching.

When initially applying to the Teacher Education program, students must submit printed copies of their official Praxis CORE score report(s) with their application materials.

PRAXIS CORE (Core Academic Skills for Educators) Score Requirements:

Writing Exam - Code 5722

  • All students are required to submit official scores for the PRAXIS CORE Writing exam.
  • A passing score on the Writing exam is 162
  • A score of 152-161 on the PRAXIS CORE Writing test may allow for probationary admittance; students must work with their program coordinator/advisor to determine remediation steps for probationary admittance.

 Math Exam - Code 5732

  • Not required for Elementary majors with a grade of B or better in MATH 105. 
  • Required for Elementary majors with a grade of C in MATH 105; must pass with a score of 150. 
  • Not required for Secondary or K-12; must earn a grade of C or higher in MATH 110 or higher level required MATH course, per program. See program sheet for required math course.

Testing Requirements for Student Teaching - Praxis II/PLACE

To be eligible for student teaching, all student teacher candidates submit scores of a state-approved content area licensure exam before the semester in which they wish to student teach. A score report must be submitted to CTE before students can begin their student teaching. PRAXIS exams are accepted for ALL CONTENT AREAS as of June 9, 2016.

Students can register for exams through the PRAXIS web site. Colorado's agency code is 7040. The Recipient code for Colorado Mesa University is RA 4484.The test center code for the Grand Junction site, located at Colorado Mesa University is 5307.   • To register for all 4 subject exams at once, use the 5001 test code.
  • Passing scores in all 4 subjects are required.
  • You can take or retake the subject exams separately. To do so use the individual exam codes: Reading (5002); Math (5003); Social Studies (5004); Science (5005).

The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) accepts all PLACE tests for both student teaching and educator licensing. The PLACE exam is being discontinued after May 2017—see the news from CDE below for more information.  Passing score for all PLACE exams is 220. Please check the PLACE web site for the most up-to-date information regarding test dates, times, and fees http://www.place.nesinc.com.

News from CDE about Exam Changes per https://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeprof/edprepandlicensingcontentassessmentproject2016:

  • The newly adopted Praxis exams will be accepted in Colorado based on our Colorado Endorsement Requirements after June 9, 2016 and will be available to be taken in Colorado after September 1, 2016.
  • The current Elementary Praxis exam #5018 will be offered in Colorado until September 1. After September 1, 2016, the newly adopted Praxis Elementary Exam #5001 Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects will be available to be taken in Colorado. Praxis exam #5001 replaces exam #5018 as the required exam.
  • The last administration of all PLACE exams will be May 6, 2017. Scores from these exams will be accepted until May 6, 2022 if taken prior to May 6, 2017.
