What is a 1098-T and what do I use it for?

The 1098-T is an informational form only. The current US tax code requires colleges and universities to provide Form 1098-T: Tuition Payments Statement, for the purposes of determining a student's eligibility for the Hope and Lifetime Learning education tax credits as per the Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education.

When and where is the 1098-T available?

The University is required to have the 1098-T available to the students by January 31, for the prior calendar year transactions. The 1098-T is available through both MAVzone and ECSI. Login instructions are detailed, above, on this web page.

What zip code do I use when accessing my 1098-T in ECSI?

Your 1098-T is filed based on the permanent address on file with the University. You will utilize that zip code to access your 1098-T.

Who is excluded from receiving a 1098-T?

The University is not required to furnish a 1098-T statement for:

  • Courses for which no academic credit is offered, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program
  • Nonresident alien students, unless requested by the student
  • Students whose qualified tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships, grants, COF, third party payments, or VA payments to the school.

What is the University required to report on the 1098-T?

The IRS provides the option to schools to report either "Payments Received for Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses" (Box 1) or "Amounts Billed for Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses" (Box 2), not both. The University reports only the "Amounts Billed for Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses" (Box 2).

What are "Qualified Expenses" and are housing, books, and other miscellaneous charges included on the 1098-T?

Only tuition and mandatory fees are considered qualified expenses such as:

  • Credit Earning Tuition Charges
  • General Student Fees
  • Facility Debt Service Fees
  • Matriculation Fees
  • Course Specific Fees

Can I use the 1098-T as proof of payment for tuition and fees?

No. The University is not required to provide this information on the 1098-T. Students must track receipts of their payments to the school in order to claim the tuition and related expenses. You can retrieve copies of your payment history with a valid picture ID from the CMU Business Office or via ePay in your MAVzone.

What time frame is included on the 1098-T?

The University is required to report the 1098-T by tax year, not academic year.
