Principles of Excellence

Colorado Mesa University proudly complies with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Principles of Excellence and is committed to supporting those who have served our country. Veterans and their eligible dependents can count on CMU for the current information they need to receive education benefits through the VA.

Provide a personalized and standardized form to help those understand the total cost of the educational program including:

  1. Tuition and fees
  2. Cost that will be covered by Federal educational benefits
  3. Amount of Financial Aid students qualify for
  4. Estimated student loan debt upon graduation
  5. Information about student outcomes
  6. Other information to facilitate comparison of aid packages offered by different educational institutions.
Inform students who are eligible to receive Federal military and veterans educational benefits. Alert the students of their eligibility before:
  1. Packaging or arranging private student loans
  2. Alternative financing programs
End fraudulent and aggressive recruiting techniques on and off military installations and:
  1. Misrepresentation
  2. Payment of incentive compensation
  3. Failure to meet State authorization requirements
Obtain the approval of the institution’s accrediting agency for new course or program offerings.
  1. Before enrolling students in courses
  2. Provided that approval is appropriate
Allow service members and reservists to be readmitted to a program if they are temporarily unable to attend class due to service requirements.
  1. Take steps to accommodate short absences
  2. Provided that satisfactory academic progress is made by the service members and reservists
Agree to a refund policy that is aligned with the refund of unearned student aid rules

Provide educational plans for all individuals using Federal military and veteran educational benefits.
  1. Detail how they will fulfill all the requirements to graduate
  2. Detail the expected timeline of completion
Designate a point of contact for academic and financial advising
  1. Access to disability counseling
  2. Successful with the completion of their studies
  3. Help with searching for a job

Marketing, Recruiting and Advertising

Colorado Mesa University maintains policies that reflect program integrity requirements consistent with regulations issued by the Department of Education (34 C.F.R 668.71-668.75 and 668.14) related to restrictions on misrepresentation, recruitment, and payment of incentive compensation. This applies to Colorado Mesa University itself and its agents, including third party lead generators, marketing firms, or companies that own or operate the educational institution. As part of efforts to eliminate unfair, deceptive, and abusive marketing aimed at Service members, Colorado Mesa University will:

  1. Ban inducements, including any gratuity, favor, discount, entertainment, hospitality, loan, transportation, lodging, meals, or other item having a monetary value of more than a de minimis [defined as “an insignificant amount”] to any individual or entity, or its agents including third party lead generators or marketing firms other than salaries paid to employees or fees paid to contractors in conformity with all applicable laws for the purpose of securing enrollments of Service members or obtaining access to TA funds. Educational institution sponsored scholarships or grants and tuition reductions available to military students are permissible;
  2. Refrain from providing any commission, bonus, or other incentive payment based directly or indirectly on securing enrollments or federal financial aid (including TA funds) to any persons or entities engaged in any student recruiting, admission activities, or making decisions regarding the award of student financial assistance;
  3. Refrain from high-pressure recruitment tactics such as making multiple unsolicited contacts (3 or more), including contacts by phone, email, or in-person, and engaging in same-day recruitment and registration for the purpose of securing Service member enrollments.
