Employment Opportunities

  1. Download an employment application form and an availability form.
  2. Check with the Financial Aid Office to see if you are eligible for work study.
  3. Turn in your completed application with availability form to the Rec. Center Front Desk.

Students who are interested in physical activity, sports, and/or kinesiology are good candidates for the many part-time jobs generated by the large variety of programs and services offered at the Rec Center.  Students may apply for any position.  Positions include: Building Managers, Reception Attendant, Fitness Attendant, Personal Trainers, Child Care Attendants, Group Exercise Instructors, Climbing Wall Attendants, LifeGuards, Special Events Support Staff, and Intramural Sports Game Officials or Scorekeepers.

The positions listed above are described below :

Building Manager

Job Description: Building Managers (BM) supervise the entire Recreation Center and all of its employees. BMs are responsible for overall facility operations, enforcing the rules and regulations of the rec. center, enacting the safety plan when appropriate, and any additional tasks that may be assigned. This position will require responsible and effective communication with participants at all times. They will be responsible for opening and/or closing the facility. BMs are expected to promote other campus recreation programs or fitness events and classes.

Job Requirements:

  • Positive leadership abilities, responsibility, a positive attitude, and enthusiasm are required.
  • All Recreation Center employees must be CPR and First Aid certified prior to being hired.
  • Adherence to the Colorado Mesa University Recreation Center employee handbook (which holds uniform guidelines, staff policies, expected behaviors and duties) is required.
  • Attend all BM trainings, monthly staff meetings and other such specified requirements.
  • Check email and voice messages frequently and respond promptly.

Child Care Attendant

Job Description: Child Care Attendants (CCA) is responsible for caring for children ages 6 months to 10 years of age. They are responsible for providing a safe and welcoming environment for children to play. CCAs should create and implement a variety of fun and entertaining activities, and enforcing the rules to the children. CCAs are expected clean and maintain the child care area.

Job Requirements:

  • A positive attitude, passion for working with children, creativity, and enthusiasm are required.
  • All Recreation Center employees must be CPR and First Aid certified prior to being hired. This position also requires Infant/Child CPR and AED.
  • Adherence to the Colorado Mesa University Recreation Center employee handbook (which holds uniform guidelines, staff policies, expected behaviors and duties) is required.
  • Attend all CCA trainings, monthly staff meetings and other such specified requirements.

Climbing Wall Attendant

Job Description: Indoor Climbing Wall Attendant are responsible for the day to day operation of the Colorado Mesa University Recreation Center climbing wall. Staff is required to supervise all climbing activities including completion of liability waivers by participants, safety technique and belay instruction, belaying of single climbers, supervision of climbers with partners, and maintenance of all climbing wall equipment. This position will require responsible and effective communication with participants at all times. They will be responsible for opening and/or closing the facility. Climbing wall staff is expected to promote other campus recreation programs or fitness events and classes.

Job Requirements:

  • All Recreation Center employees must be CPR and First Aid certified prior to being hired.

  • Attend all indoor climbing wall trainings, monthly staff meetings and other such specified requirements.

Fitness Attendant

Job Description: Fitness Attendants (FA) supervise the multiple fitness areas. FAs will assist participants with daily activity; including equipment orientation, spotting, basic fitness information, etc. They will be asked to assist with special events and workshops. General cleaning of the equipment and fitness area is required. FAs will be responsible for monitoring the safety of participants. They will be responsible for supervising the weight room and cardio area, enforcing the rules and regulations, offering strength/cardio equipment orientations, providing good customer service, communicating with other attendants as well as the Manager or Wellness and Fitness on a regular basis, and any additional duties that may be assigned. FAs are expected to promote other campus recreation programs or fitness events and classes.

Job Requirements:

  • A positive attitude, love of fitness, and enthusiasm are required.
  • A background in Kinesiology, Health Science or related fitness activity preferred but not required.
  • All Recreation Center employees must be CPR and First Aid certified prior to being hired.
  • Adherence to the Colorado Mesa University Recreation Center employee handbook (which holds uniform guidelines, staff policies, expected behaviors and duties) is required.
  • Attend all FA trainings, monthly staff meetings and other such specified requirements.

Group Exercise Instructor

Job Description: Group Exercise Instructors lead group exercise classes. Each instructor will provide a fun and safe environment. Instructors will hold class in a 50 minute format which includes warm up, workout, cool down. Instructors will be scheduled for specific classes. They will be responsible for preparing a routine for that class including safety, technique, and motivational cues. They will be responsible for setting up 5-10 minutes prior to class, cleaning the room after class, provide good customer service, enforcing the rules and regulations of the rec center, communicating with other instructors as well as the Manager or Wellness and Fitness on a regular basis, and any additional duties that may be assigned. Instructors are expected to promote other campus recreation programs or fitness events and classes.

Job Requirements:

  • A positive attitude, love of fitness, a passion for helping others, and enthusiasm are required.
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Previous teaching or participation experience is required.
  • A nationally accredited group exercise certification is preferred but not required.
  • Must be working towards or have earned an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or other related health field, or carry extensive experience within the field.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • All Recreation Center employees must be CPR and First Aid certified prior to being hired.

Indoor Cycling Instructor

Job Description: Under the direction of the Manager of Wellness and Fitness, the Group Exercise Cycling Instructor is responsible for preparing a 50 minute class which includes warm up, workout, cool down, as well as a routine for that class including safety, technique, and motivational cues. They will be responsible for setting up 5-10 minutes prior to class, cleaning the room after class, provide good customer service, enforcing the rules and regulations of the rec center, communicating with other instructors as well as the Manager or Wellness and Fitness on a regular basis, and any additional duties that may be assigned. Instructors are expected to promote other campus recreation programs or fitness events and classes. S/he will be responsible for maintaining the highest levels of customer service and professionalism while delivering safe, effective health & fitness programs to members.

Class is every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00 p.m. as well as Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 p.m. You will also have the opportunity to teach a weekend class if you so wish, as well as substitute teach for other instructors throughout the week.

Intramural Official

Job Description: Intramural Officials will officiate Intramural Team Sports including Flag Football, Basketball, Softball, Soccer, Volleyball, and other Seasonal Team Sports. Work under the supervision of the Student Supervisor of Intramural Sports along with the Manager of Intramural and Club Sports. This position will require attendance for the mandatory training and evaluation sessions. Officiating is a seasonal employment opportunity with scheduling based on weekly performance evaluations.

Job Requirements:

  • Assist in setting up equipment for evening and/or weekend activities.
  • Assist in examining facilities for safety hazards.
  • View and follow the Intramural Sports contest and enforce the rules judiciously as possible.
  • Oversee the Intramural Sports contest and ensure participation takes place in a safe manner.
  • Assist in completing any forms that are in need of completing after contests.
  • Assist in closing down the activity area and collecting equipment at the conclusion of the activities.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Colorado Mesa University Intramural Sports Handbook.
  • A thorough knowledge of the Sports being officiated.
  • Physical ability to keep up with the sports being officiated.

Intramural Scorekeeper

Job Description: Intramural Scorekeeper will keep score of Intramural Team Sports including Flag Football, Basketball, Softball, Soccer, Volleyball, and other Seasonal Team Sports. LifeGuard

Job Description: Lifeguard enforces the rules and regulations of the aquatics center, enacting the safety plan when appropriate, and any additional tasks that may be assigned. This position will require responsible and effective communication with participants at all times. They will be responsible for opening and/or closing the facility. Expected to promote and assist with other aquatics programs.

  • Ensures that only cardholding patrons utilize the facility and that all guests pay a fee.

  • Supervises lap and recreational swims, enforcing rules and regulations.
  • Provides surveillance and observation of pool deck locker rooms and immediate area.
  • Performs appropriate maintenance and housekeeping duties listed on duty roster.

Personal Trainer

Job Description: We are currently seeking an ambitious Personal Trainer that is passionate about providing healthy lifestyle programs and supporting healthy lifestyle habits to work at the Hamilton Rec Center at Colorado Mesa University. A Hamilton Rec Center Personal Trainer identifies participant goals, performs individualized assessments, and implements progressive, personalized exercise prescriptions designed for members. Personal Trainers provide outstanding customer service with any participant who enters the fitness center and engage members regularly. Initial training courses are required upon hire and continuing education is encouraged throughout employment with the Hamilton Rec Center. Personal Trainers also stay actively involved in wellness programs for their members, in the form of competitions, screenings, newsletters, lectures and fitness and wellness fairs.

Job Requirements:

  • A positive attitude, love of fitness, a passion for helping others, and enthusiasm are required.
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must be working towards or currently have a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology or in a related field, or carry extensive experience within the field.
  • A nationally accredited Personal Training certification is preferred but not required.

Reception Attendant

Job Description: Reception Attendants (RA) are the first impression of the Recreation Center. They are responsible for controlling access to the rec. center while providing a high level of quality customer service (i.e. - greeting and providing program information). RAs need to be knowledgeable in the activities, events of the rec. center in order to inform participants. RAs are also responsible for checking in/out recreation equipment, acting as a resource, dealing with money, answering telephones, enforcing the rules and regulations of the rec. center, and any additional tasks that may be assigned. RAs are expected to promote other campus recreation programs or fitness events and classes.
