Summer Research Opportunities

Off Campus Opportunities

There are a variety of research opportunities in physics at other universities and colleges, national laboratories, government agencies and other institutions. Many of these are specifically intended for undergraduate students. These are typically designed to give undergraduate students a feel for the world of research in physics and the expectations in terms of new results and publications are tailored accordingly; undergraduates in such programs are not competing with graduate students or postdoctoral researchers.

Some of the more prominent programs are listed below.

  • NSF REU program The National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates consists of many individual programs in physics and other disciplines at universities and national laboratories throughout the United States. Individual programs are administered by the host university or institution. The NSF website provides links to these.
  • NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program Summer internships at NASA facilities throughout the United States.
  • Fermilab SIST-Summer Internships in Science and Technology  Fermilab is the largest particle accelerator in the United States. Internships for students interested in experimental particle physics.
  • Department of Energy Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships The department of energy oversees many of the national laboratories in the United States. Work done at these laboratories ranges from fundamental physics to weapons development top environmental science.
  • SPS Internships Internships in both research and outreach/policy.
  • Compadre list A list of summer internship opportunities in physics and related disciplines at a wide range of institutions.
