Founded in 1925, the institution has grown from a junior college enrolling 41 students to a vibrant university, of more than 8,900, offering a full-range of undergraduate programs and a growing number of graduate programs.

The John U. Tomlinson Library is the largest academic library between Salt Lake City and Denver. The library offers a wealth of information and provides many different services and resources to both the campus and the community. It is the mission of the library to support the information, instructional and research needs of the region.
Today, holdings in Tomlinson Library include 395,200 books; 59,300 journals; 30,500 e-books/documents; and more than 30 million items available through Prospector.
- Athletics
Athletics play a key role in the growth of our students and are an integral part of the university experience. Students are given the chance to attend or participate in a wide range of sports and athletic activities including a number of varsity and intramural sports. With more than 70 conference and regional titles, Colorado Mesa University gives student-athletes the opportunity to earn a degree while competing at a top Division II institution.

"I began looking for an online bachelors program during the fall of 2010. As a police officer that works shift work and has a full time family, the traditional in-class school setting would have been difficult. Colorado Mesa University has given me the ability to earn my degree through taking classes online. I am pursuing my Bachelors of Applied Science degree in Public Administration/Public Safety which goes along with my career in public service. This program has helped me to see a different aspect of public service from more than being a police officer. I can also understand what my superiors such as the chief of police and the city manager must do to perform their jobs and answer to the public at the same time."
