CMU Professor Eric Miles, PhD sees math in the world wherever he looks. That's why he is excited for the 22nd Annual Math Extravaganza at CMU where university faculty and students showcase math to area high school students that they might not otherwise see.

On Thursday, February 27 more than 150 western Colorado area high school students will gather at Colorado Mesa University to explore areas of math that are not encountered in standard school curriculum.

“Math Extravaganza is a full-day event which is partially funded by generous donations from businesses in our

community,” said CMU Assistant Professor of Mathematics Eric Miles, PhD. “The event gives high school students a chance to interact with fun and interesting mathematics that they wouldn't normally see. The students have a chance to win prizes, and get to spend time with college students who are also excited about math.”

This year’s activities include stations analyzing knots and shuffles, a presentation about an unsolved problem in mathematics, a campus tour and an awards ceremony. All activities except the campus tour are in the University Center. Activities begin at 9:20am following a welcome from CMU Vice President for Academic Affairs Kurt Haas. Presentation of prizes should be competed about 2:00 pm.

"As an English professor it's fun to be invited to help kick off a math event," said Haas."I'm here to tell students in the community that all are welcome to attend and see why mathematics are an important part of our world."

Math Extravaganza includes students from Caprock Academy, Central, Delta, Fruita Monument, Grand Mesa, Grand Junction, Grand Valley and Plateau Valley high schools as well as area homeschools are expected to participate.

Presentation of prizes will conclude around 2:00pm.
