Almost 600 to graduate at CMU 2016 December Commencement

About 590 Colorado Mesa University students will graduate this month, having earned about 640 degrees and/or certificates. This is the largest number to graduate at a December ceremony since CMU began hosting December commencements in 2011.

The 2016 December Commencement will be on Friday, Dec. 16, starting at 9:30am in Brownson Arena in the Maverick Center.

The commencement speaker, who was selected by CMU’s Associated Student Government, will be Tim Hatten, PhD. Hatten is a business professor at CMU and also coordinates a study abroad program.

He grew up working in his family's International Harvester farm equipment dealership and went on to own a Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac dealership before entering academia. He wrote a textbook, Small Business Management, which is sold in more than 30 countries. He also works closely with the local Business Incubator Center.

Hatten received a Fulbright Scholar award in 2001, teaching at Reykjavik University in Iceland, and again in 2011, teaching and working with the student incubator at Niels Brock Copenhagen Business School in Denmark. He has taught aspiring entrepreneurs in the Russian Far East and Scandinavia and has taken students on extensive tours of business across China and Europe.

Hatten earned his bachelor’s degree from Western State Colorado University, his master’s from Central Missouri State and his PhD from the University of Missouri.

Those who plan to attend commencement are encouraged to arrive early as the event is expected to be standing-room-only and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Overflow rooms will be available in the Maverick Center in designated classrooms, where the audience will be able to view the ceremonies via live stream.

For those who are unable to attend the ceremony but want to share the moment, the ceremony will be broadcast online beginning at 9:20 am MST on Friday, Dec, 16, at  http://www.ustream.tv/channel/coloradomesalive.
