Para-cycling national championships heading to Grand Junction

Come late April 2017, there will be an influx of 450+ cyclists to the Grand Valley including 100 para-cycling riders competing in the USA Cycling Para-Cycling Road National Championships.

The Greater Grand Junction Sports Commission (GGJSC) learned Colorado Mesa was selected to be the host school for the USA Cycling Collegiate National Road Championships last November and just announced yesterday (Oct. 17) that the para-cycling national championships would be held in conjunction with the collegiate event.

The GGJSC was instrumental in bringing both races to Grand Junction and beat out numerous other possible host cities, including frontrunner Bend, Oregon, for the para-cycling championships, said Jennifer Stoll, GGJSC executive director.

With the race just six months away, the work is just beginning.

“We’ve hosted collegiate (cycling) regionals for the last four or five years,” Stoll said. “So the local organizing committee for regionals is going to help with nationals.”

The planning for the courses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising all need to happen before the races occur April 27-30, 2017. Stoll said it is fortunate that there is community support from a lot of different individuals and organizations and that the organizing committee is already meeting regularly.

The exact courses have yet to be determined but both championships will include a time trial, road races and a criterium.

The sports commission has worked since last spring to bring the para-cycling championships to Grand Junction because the race will have a positive economic impact and will increase the Grand Valley’s appeal as a future host city for large outdoor races and events, Stoll said.

“As a whole, this race continues to put our community on the map for outdoor recreation and for cycling more specifically,” Stoll said.

The GGJSC is a partnership among Colorado Mesa, Mesa County, the cities of Grand Junction and Fruita and the town of Palisade.  The sports commission’s mission is to represent the Grand Junction area in attracting new sports, enhancing existing sports and delivering customer service driven events that positively impact the local economy and community.
