Scholarship fund established in memory of slain officer

The Western Colorado Peace Officers Academy (WCPOA) at Western Colorado Community College and Crimes Stoppers of Mesa County are raising money for the Derek Geer Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship was established in honor of Mesa County Deputy Derek Geer, who was killed in the line of duty on February 8. The scholarship is intended to provide financial support to a newly graduating academy student who embodies the dedication, compassion and spirit of Geer. The current academy class has established this scholarship fund as a legacy project, with the intent that future academy classes will continue the tradition.

The WCPOA will hold several fundraising activities during the upcoming weeks to support the scholarship including:

  • May Day Dining Donations - On May 1, Golden Corral and other participating restaurants will accept donations to the scholarship fund.
  • Chick-fil-A fundraiser – On May 5 between 5-7 pm, Chick-fil-A will donate a percentage of sales to the scholarship fund.
  • Theta Xi fundraiser – On May 7, the CMU fraternity will host a fundraising event on the CMU campus.

Donations to the fund may be made through the CMU Foundation, 1450 N 12th St., or online at www.supportingCMU.com/giving.

The official establishment of the scholarship will be announced at the WCPOA graduation on May 3, 2016.  The graduation ceremony will be in the Meyer Ballroom in the University Center at 5 pm.
