From the president

No more pencils. No more books. No more teacher’s dirty looks. So goes the traditional children’s rhyme marking the beginning of summer. You may think that school’s almost out for summer and, for some of you, it may be.

But reality in higher education today is that school is never out. With summer classes and online classes not to mention special projects and preparing for new academic programs, we will be busy this summer.

One of the more visible projects this summer for those of us on campus will be the renovation of the Bookcliff Café in the University Center. We will tear into that before finals are over so we can get it finished and ready to re-open in August for the fall semester. The renovation will include adding Chick-fil-A to the dining options, a provider selected by students. I’m told there is some chatter about it in the Twittersphere already. One student was overheard saying she was so pleased she got chills when she first learned Chick-fil-A was coming to campus.

One of the more significant additions we are preparing for will be the expansion of our partnership with the University of Colorado – Boulder to include civil engineering. The mechanical engineering program has clearly been a success and area employers have made clear their desire to hire civil engineers as well.

Western Colorado Community College is also adding new programs in response to community needs. The EMT program has been revised and re-invigorated. You will also see new programs in aviation and viticulture as well a new program to prepare students for careers as electricians.

And, of course, we will continue work on turning the old Community Hospital into the new CMU Health Sciences building. That project also includes turning a hospital campus into a college campus. You will see a lot more green!

I can’t end without congratulating the CMU Softball Team. Really, 29 consecutive games won and off to the playoffs, which will be Thursday through Saturday at CMU! The team is ranked No. 18 nationally and claimed the RMAC regular season title.

Go Mavs!
