The Colorado Mesa University Art Gallery presents Austerity, an installation work by ceramicist Steve Hilton. Hilton’s recent ceramic installations utilize mainly unfired clay, as a result of an exhibit and residency in Camagüey, Cuba where he observed clay artists do so much with so little. Austerity runs now through Sept. 28.
Hilton received his Master of Fine Arts in ceramics from Arizona State University and also holds an Master of Science in art education and a Bachelor of Science in geology. His work, which is a fusion of sculptural and wheel-thrown components, is in the permanent collections of museums, universities and private individuals in the U.S. and in numerous foreign countries. He is currently a full-time ceramics and art education faculty member at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and is the programs director for the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA).
The Colorado Mesa University Art Gallery is located at 437 Colorado Avenue. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 12-5pm and admission is free. On Aug. 15 at 10am, Hilton will give a presentation in the studio space behind the gallery. On Aug. 21 there will be a public reception to view the exhibit from 6-10pm, with an artist talk at 6:30pm.
