Maverick Classic rolls back into town

Each April,  more than 200 cyclists and their supporters travel from all over the region to compete in Colorado Mesa University’s Maverick Classic. It returns to the Grand Valley on April 24–26. The race, now in its fourth year, is the regional championship for the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference (RMCCC), but the riders are not all student-athletes from schools like the University of Wyoming and Colorado State University. Nearly 100 local cyclists compete in the open class races, taking advantage of the classic’s unique courses.

This year, there’s new appeal for recreational cyclists. “New this year we have a permit from the Colorado National Monument to do a hill climb on Friday afternoon,” said CMU event manager Jennifer Stoll. “That’s going to be a huge draw because the monument is a bucket list venue for many cyclists.”

The three races required by the RMCCC will mostly remain unchanged. On Saturday morning, there will be team and individual time trial races on the rolling farmland roads north of Fruita. Sunday’s road race will be held in Whitewater, Colo. this year instead of in Palisade.

The Maverick Classic’s crown jewel, the Downtown Criterium, starts at noon on Saturday. “For people who haven’t been down to the crit, it’s a really fun Saturday,” Stoll said. The race is held in conjunction with the Manufacturers of Outdoor Gear Festival, also known as MOG Fest. “They have live music all day, a beer garden and tons of vendors selling outdoor apparel and goods. It’s a great lively atmosphere for cycling, shopping at the MOG Fest and downtown retailers and visiting the restaurants,” said Stoll.

It takes more than 100 volunteers to ensure the Maverick Classic runs smoothly. “There’s definitely still a need for volunteers,” Stoll said. Volunteers receive training, gift bags and the best seats in the house. To sign up to volunteer, visit
