Saucy student startup to compete in business pitch challenge

Colorado Mesa University’s Rocky Mountain Sriracha start-up company has been selected as one of 13 collegiate competitors in the Blue Ocean Enterprises Challenge, one of the nation’s richest business pitch competitions. The competitors were selected from more than 130 applications and represent 15 industry categories, three Colorado universities and five states.

The 13 Collegiate Track and 15 Enterprise Track competitors will pitch their business ideas in May for a grand prize package of $250,000 in cash and a 12-month business mentoring program. Collegiate Track competitors will pitch their businesses to a panel of high-profile judges on May 27 and Enterprise Track competitors — all established startups — will compete on May 29-30.

The winner of the Collegiate Track will receive $20,000 in cash, business mentoring and a slot to compete in the Enterprise Track for a grand prize of $250,000. All events will be held at Colorado State University.

Student Patrick Wall will represent CMU. Wall was one of the founders of the company that started as a collaboration between a local entrepreneur and group of entrepreneurial-minded students in business instructor Georgann Jouflas’ entrepreneurship course. The team gave one of the winning pitches in last year’s Entrepreneurship Day Elevator Pitch competition. It also represented CMU’s Entrepreneurship Club at the national Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization pitch competition last fall.

Last summer, Rocky Mountain Sriracha raised more than $9,000 in startup funds in a Kickstarter campaign as a project in Jouflas’ entrepreneurial finance course. The company is now gearing up to produce its product for regional distribution.
