Fall season wraps up with honors as winter season kicks off

This month, Colorado Mesa University’s volleyball, men’s soccer and football teams all celebrated victories. Volleyball won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) regular season and tournament championships, earning the No. 1 seed. The Mavericks will host the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) South Central Regional on Nov. 21-23. CMU will face eighth seed Angelo State University in the opening round. Men’s soccer celebrates winning their Nov. 20 game against St. Edward’s University in Seattle, Wash.

The men’s soccer team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. On Nov. 20, the Mavericks faced South Central region No. 1 seed St. Edward’s University in Seattle, Wash. Colorado Mesa will stay in Seattle to play No. 14 California State University, Los Angeles on Nov. 22 at 8pm, mountain time.

The CMU football team rallied to defeat Western State Colorado University in the series finale for both schools. With the win, the Mavericks finish the season 6-5 overall and 5-4 in the RMAC. This is the first winning season for CMU football since 2008.

Men’s cross country finished fourth as a team at the RMAC Cross Country Championships. This is the highest the team has ever placed at the championships. The women’s team also finished fourth at the RMAC Championship, the highest place the women’s team has finished in the event since 2009. The 2014-2015 track and field season begins Dec. 12 at a Colorado School of Mines event in Golden, Colo.

The women’s soccer team finished out their season with a 1-13-2 record. The last game of the season was a loss at home against Adams State University.

Maverick wrestling has a record of 2-0-0 so far, leaving the recent Doubletree Open with three champs. The team will compete in the upcoming University of Nebraska, Kearny Holiday Inn Open on Nov. 22 in Kearny, Neb.

Maverick swimming and diving will compete in the upcoming CMU Invitational on Dec. 4-6 in CMU’s El Pomar Natatorium. The team won 11 events in a triangular with Colorado School of Mines and Div. I University of Northern Colorado on Nov. 15.

Men’s basketball has started the 2014-2015 season off strong with a 1-1 record so far. The team has upcoming games in Colorado Springs on Nov. 21 and 22. The women’s basketball team is also off to a good start with a 1-1 record. They’ll play at Brownson Arena in the upcoming Holiday inn Airport Thanksgiving Classic, Nov. 28-29.
