The Mavs bring it home

It’s Homecoming 2014 and Colorado Mesa University athletics is doing the university proud.

The Colorado Mesa University football team scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes to defeat Western New Mexico University 45-35 on Oct. 18, bringing their overall record to 5–2. The Mavericks take on Fort Lewis College on Oct. 25 for the Homecoming game. Before the game, the wrestling team hosts its annual Steak and Crab Fest fundraiser.

On Oct. 18, CMU Volleyball won its eighth straight game in a three-game sweep of the Adams State University Grizzlies. The victory marks the Mavs’ ninth straight home victory dating back to last season. The team stays at home to play Colorado State University, Pueblo on Oct. 24 and Western State Colorado University on Oct. 25.

Men’s soccer celebrated a 4-0 win over the Colorado Christian University Cougars on Oct. 17. The win was the Mavericks’ eighth in a row and their fifth shutout in a row. The team takes on Fort Lewis on Oct. 24. The women’s team hosts New Mexico Highlands University on Oct. 24 on Walker Field.

The Colorado Mesa University cycling team used home course advantage to tally nine top-10 finishes at the Maverick Classic on Oct. 11-12. A portion of the race took place on the CMU campus. CMU will compete at the Collegiate Mountain Biking National Championships Oct. 24-26 in Beech Mountain, N.C.

The Colorado Mesa men’s golf team closed out its fall season with a seventh place finish at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) #2 Tournament at Eisenhower Golf Course at the United States Air Force Academy. The Colorado Mesa women’s golf team closed out the fall schedule on Tuesday after finishing fifth at the Dixie State Fall Invitational.

Women’s tennis closed the fall season with a 6-3 win over CSU-Pueblo on Oct. 4. The men’s team defeated Montana State University-Billings 8-1 and CSU-Pueblo 9-0 on Oct. 5 to close its season as well. The tennis season resumes in January.

Women’s rugby will play its first game on the new CMU rugby field, west of the Plaza, on Oct. 26. The team takes on the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
