Montrose campus expands across (and in) the street

Colorado Mesa University’s Montrose campus hosted a ribbon-cutting and unveiling ceremony on Sept. 3 to officially open the Branscome Center and the campus’ new quad. Speakers at the event included Montrose city and county officials, Jim Branscome and CMU President Tim Foster.

The Branscome Center, named in recognition of the long-standing support of CMU’s Montrose campus by the Jim Branscome family, is the second building on the Montrose campus. The 3,200-square-foot building is at 245 S. Cascade Ave., across from the campus’ main building. The student support services center houses a student lounge that also serves as an area for tutoring, and a room for student clubs and organizations to meet. There are also offices for student advising, career services, testing and financial aid.

One of the highlights of the event was a performance by the CMU marching band, the Maverick Stampede. After performing at the grand opening ceremonies, the marching band travelled to the football field at Montrose High School, where it held a public practice.

Plans for the new quad were developed after the City of Montrose agreed to vacate the block of S. Cascade Avenue between Second and Third streets, providing easier and safer pedestrian traffic between the campus buildings.

The expansion of the Montrose campus is a result of CMU’s ongoing commitment to provide access to quality higher education to students in Montrose and the surrounding communities. The Branscome Center building was purchased as part of a cooperative effort among the university, the City of Montrose and Montrose County.
