Safe Zone kicks off on campus

More than 60 faculty and staff members attended the initial training for the CMU Safe Zone program. Safe Zones are found on many college and university campuses across the country striving to incorporate an atmosphere of inclusivity and appreciation. CMU’s program was developed by Enrique Tejada, North Avenue Residence Hall Coordinator; Mitch Karstens, Director of Student Life; and Danny Sandoval, Director of Diversity, Advocacy and Health. The office of Human Resources also provided consultation and participated in committee meetings.

During the training, a variety of information was presented to participants, including statistics on the demographics at CMU compared to national averages. Participants engaged in activities and discussion that help break down stereotypes, examine privilege in our society and diminish bias and phobic behavior. One of the more engaging pieces of the training was a privilege walk. Participants answered questions about themselves by moving forward and backward to illustrate the various types of privilege they have in society.

To conclude the training, participants were given the option of signing an ally contract. Participants who opted to sign this contract will have a visible sticker near their office to identify their area as a safe zone.

The Safe Zone committee will continue to offer additional trainings in the fall semester for faculty and staff who would like to receive the first phase of training, as well as more in-depth training for faculty and staff who completed the first phase. If you are interested in Safe Zone training for your department, the Safe Zone committee will be happy to meet your needs.
