Mavericks win accolades as fall season begins

The athletic season is heating back up, but CMU student-athletes excelled during the summer months, too.

Track athlete Whitney Rowe competed in the British Columbia Championships and took home the gold in both the 100m and 200m dash in the senior division. Rowe, a junior, set personal bests in both of the events with an 11.73 in the 100m and a 24.36 in the 200m.

The women’s basketball team continues to impress after placing eighth academically in the NCAA with a team GPA of 3.525. The Mavericks will open their RMAC and NCAA South Central Region title defense in November at the Southwestern Oklahoma Classic.

The volleyball team earned an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) academic award this summer. The Mavericks are one of 77 NCAA Division II teams to earn the award, given to teams with a GPA above 3.3. The Mavs open their season on Sept. 6 in San Angelo, Texas. During their home opener on Sept. 24, they’ll play Fort Lewis College in Brownson Arena.

In early August, the men’s lacrosse team picked up an historical honor from the NCAA. The Mavericks had the best Man-Down Defense in the country last season. It is the first time in program history that they have been crowned a statistical champion.

The RMAC released its Preseason Poll for football and picked CMU to finish sixth in the conference, just behind Adams State and Colorado School of Mines. Junior running back Jake Cimolino was selected preseason All-RMAC after finishing second in the conference last season in rushing. He is joined on the preseason All-RMAC team by senior linebacker Jake Edmiston.

Women’s lacrosse will be added as an RMAC sport starting in the 2013-14 school year.

CMU will be joined by participating members including Adams State University, Fort Lewis College and Regis University. Lindenwood University (St. Charles, Mo.) and Rockhurst University (Kansas City, Mo.) will also participate in RMAC Women’s Lacrosse as associate members.

With the addition of women’s lacrosse, the RMAC now sponsors 23 sports. This is the first sport added to the conference since men’s and women’s swimming and diving in 2008.
