Department of Theatre Arts announces summer season

May10The Department of Theatre Arts has announced selections for the second summer season of Mesa Repertory Theatre (MRT). The season runs for three weekends June 13-29. This year, MRT will present the musical Altar Boyz, the comical Complete History of America (Abridged), and an additional children’s play, Wiley and the Hairy Man.

Artistic Director Jeremy Franklin will direct the off-Broadway sensation Altar Boyz, a hilarious musical comedy about a fictitious Christian boy-band on the last night of their national “Raise the Praise” tour.

“I’ve wanted to bring this show to the Grand Valley since I first saw it in New York in 2006,” said Franklin. “It is bound to be a new favorite for the entire family. It’s Forever Plaid meets Nunsense mixed with N’Sync.”

Producer and department head Tim Pinnow will direct The Complete History of America (Abridged).

“If you loved last year’s The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), those same crazy playwrights are back with The Complete History of America, (Abridged). The history of America since Columbus is told in 90 minutes or less, depending on how much caffeine the cast drank before the show. Just don’t plan on taking any history exams after seeing it,” Pinnow said.

MRT will present an additional children’s show this year. This season’s selection is Wiley and the Hairy Man, the tale of a young boy who learns to overcome his fears with the power of his own wits. Jerry Ditter, CMU’s technical director, will direct.

Video podcasts will be released periodically until opening night and will give audiences a glimpse backstage at MRT. Videos can be found at coloradomesa.edu/theatre.

All productions will be presented in the Moss Performing Arts Center’s Mesa Experimental Theatre. The focus of MRT is on semi-professional theatre producing small, professional-quality performances with a cast of actors who are interested in perfecting the craft of live theatre performance.

Specific show dates can be found at coloradomesa.edu/theatre/MesaRepertoryTheatre.html. Tickets are available by calling the box office at 970.248.1604 or online at coloradomesa.edu/moss/theatretickets.html. •
