Student Resources

As soon as you are admitted to Colorado Mesa University, many technology resources are made available to you.   You will be able to send and receive email through the Campus email system, log into the MAVzone - the campus portal, use computers in the computer labs, and access the Internet from your personal computer in residence halls and classroom buildings.

Username and PasswordStudent on Computer in Library

To access these services you will be assigned a network username and password.  Your Acceptance Letter will contain your login information.  Typically, your username is the first and middle initials and your last name up to 14 characters.  Because of conflicts between students who have the same, your username may be somewhat different. If you have forgotten your network username, you may look it up on the Campus Directory.

You must change your password every six months.  You will be prompted to change it when it expired.  Your password must be a minimum of 8 characters.  It must contain at least one letter and one number.  You may use special characters.  You may not reuse a previous password.  If you have forgotten your password, visit the IT Help Desk located in the main computer lab in Library 120.

Click on the links below to learn additional information about some of the IT resources available to Mesa State students.

MAVzone is Colorado Mesa's Campus Portal.  The portal provides single sign-on access to information about what's going on at campus, your email, on-line classes, and network drives.  You will also use MAVzone to register for classes, drop or add classes, check grades, and view financial aid status.  Click on the MAVzone link in the navigation bar at the top of any page of the CMU website.  Use your network username and password to log in.

The CMU WLAN wireless network is available in all of the Residence Halls,  most classroom buildings, the College Center and the Maverick Center.  You are required to annually register your computer to access the CMU WLAN wireless network. Follow the instructions on the Wireless Networks web page to get connected.

You will have access to many network resources including directories.  Directories are basically folders on network file servers.  Directories are a safe place to store and share information.  A description of the different directories are contained in the following three links. Click here for detailed instructions on accessing, downloading, and uploading to network directories from MAVzone.  Alternatively, you can use WebDAV to access network resources from offsite.  Click here for instructions on using WebDAV.

Your Home Directory is created for you to store your personal academic work.  You are the only person who has access to this drive; it is not shared with anyone else. Work you store on your Home Directory is backed up nightly.  It is safer to store your work here than on other media such as a thumb or flash drive.  If you run out of storage space, call the IT Help Desk at 970.248.2111 to request additional storage space.

Faculty use the Download Directory to share course materials with students.  The Download Directory folders are named with the faculty members' usernames.   Your instructor will provide direction about when to expect course materials on the Download Directory. Only faculty members who have requested a Download Directory can store files here.  You can access the Download Directory from MAVzone.  See the detailed instructions under Network Directories, above.

Some faculty members will request that you electronically turn in assignments by saving them to the Courses Directory.  The Courses Directory has folders named by course and section.  For example if you are enrolled in CSCI-100 Section 3, will find a K:\CSCI100\003\Students\yourusername folder.  Course folders are deleted at the end of each semester, so do not use the Courses Directory for permanent file storage.

IT provides an open computer lab in the Tomlinson library reserved for student use.  The Library Lab computers are configured with Windows Office products and most of the software taught in classes.  The Library Lab is open the same hours as the library.  Each residence hall has a small computer lab that is available for your use.  These labs are open 24 hours a day.

The IT Help Desk is physically located in the back of the computer lab in Library 120.   The IT Help Desk can help you with your userid and password and answer questions about Desire 2 Learn, MAVzone, and your email account.  The IT Help Desk can also be reached by calling 970.248.2111 or entering a help desk ticket. To enter a ticket, click on the help desk icon in the upper right hand corner of MAVzone.
