MAVprint

The Associated Student Government has approved the purchase and implementation of print management software to reduce the University's printing waste. Goprint software (code name - MAVprint) was purchased and implemented for the Fall 2009 semester.

Why is print management a good idea?

Our University wastes a lot of paper

Last year we used 1.75 million sheets of paper (equivalent to 214 trees) in the Main Campus's open labs.  25%, or half a million sheets, ended up in recycle bins.  Print usage has increased 25% per year over the last two year.

Printing is expensive

Last year, we spent over $36,000 on printing supplies for the Main Campus open computer labs. (That does not include costs for printing in special purpose classrooms like the GIS and Mass Comm labs.)  Printers have an expected life span that is decreased with each page printed.

Printing wastes energy

Energy is required to produce and ship paper and toner.  Energy is required to print.  We can reduce our carbon footprint by printing less.

Other Colleges have implemented similar programs with remarkable results

UNC, DU, Western State, Fort Lewis, CSU-Pueblo have all introduced similar print management programs.  Many schools report a reduction in printing of 50% or more.

It's easy and now you can print from wireless notebooks

Using MAVprint is easy. After submitting a print job, a pop-up will appear.  Enter your username and password.  Select your print job and click the Pay and Print button.  Click here for more details. Now you can print to open lab printers from notebooks connected to the CMU WLAN. For instructions on setting up your notebook visit the Wireless Internet Access web page.

How will MAVprint work?

  • A percentage of the student technology fee is earmarked for the cost of printing in the open computer labs.
  • Each student will receive a quota of "free prints" each semester equivalent to $10.00 worth of printing.
  • Remaining balances in the quota account at the end of each semester will not be rolled forward and no refunds will be given.
  • The following rates have been established:
    Single-sided, black & white - $.05
    Double-sided, black & white - $.08
    Color - $.25
  • Students will have two "printing purses." The first purse is the quota purse that is credited with the free print allowance at the beginning of each semester.
  • The second purse contains funds that have been added to the student's MAVcard for additional printing. Visit the MAVcard office to add MAVprint money to your MAVcard.
  • Faculty will use MAVprint when printing in the labs. They will not be charged for printing and will have no quotas.
  • Students will not be charged for printing in "closed" labs where a portion of their course fee is used to purchase printing supplies. However MAVprint will track print usage in all labs.
  • High school students will not be charged for printing.

Paper Saving Tips

  • Print only the pages that you need in a document.
  • When printing Power Point slides, print them six (6) to a page, black & white only, with no background.
  • Print only what you need. Don't print drafts for every revision.
  • Use the "Print Preview" from the File menu to check your document before printing.
  • Edit and proof read papers online before printing.
  • Avoid printing email messages and Web pages.
  • Send electronic documents instead of printing hard copies.
  • Use the spell check feature to find spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Print only one copy.
  • Use the duplex function to include more than one page per printed document.
  • When printing class assignments or papers, print more than one page per sheet via Zoom option:
  • Check margins, printer, and page settings prior to printing.
  • Use the "print-friendly" option when printing Web pages.
