Required Geology Courses

All geology majors in any of the three Bachelor of Science options are required to take the following

Core Geology Classes:

  • Principles of Physical Geology and Lab, GEOL 111/111L or Field-Based Introduction to Physical Geology and Lab, GEOL 113/113L
  • Principles of Historical Geology and Lab, GEOL 112/112L
  • Introduction to Field Studies, GEOL 202
  • Computer Applications in Geology, GEOL 204
  • Structural Geology and Lab, GEOL 301/301L
  • Crystallography & Mineralogy and Lab, GEOL 331/331L
  • Applications of Geomorphology and Lab, GEOL 402/402L
  • Stratigraphy and Sedimentation and Lab, GEOL 444/444L

Students in the Geology and Environmental Geology options are also required to take:

  • Summer Field Camp, GEOL 480
  • Seminar, GEOL 490

Beyond the core geology courses, the options diverge with the following requirements:


  • Igneous & Metamorphic Petrology w/ Lab, GEOL 340/340L
  • Geophysics w/ Lab, GEOL 404/404L

Environmental Geology

  • Environmental Geology, GEOL 250
  • Basic Hydrology, GEOL 355
  • Intro to Ground Water w/ Lab, GEOL 415/415L
