Arts, Culture, Diversity

Lady in ClassroomColorado Mesa University plays a pivotal role in the cultural life of the Western Slope. The Moss Performing Arts Center hosts a menagerie of performing arts events throughout the year. Both the fine arts and the performing arts program at CMU are the epicenter for arts and culture between Denver and Salt Lake City. Not a week goes by during the academic year without a performance or cultural event happening at the University.

Each year CMU produces four mainstage theatre performances, numerous productions in the experimental "black box" theatre and dozens of music performances including faculty recitals, student recitals, symphony orchestra concerts, jazz concerts, festivals, solo performances, choir performances, ensembles and guest artists.

Faculty and students in the fine arts program produce various exhibitions throughout the year. Professors from all disciplines participate in quarterly colloquiums, special lectures, and forums.

CMU's Cultural Diversity Board, a coalition of six student organizations, also promotes and supports diversity initiatives while providing valuable on-campus educational services.

CDB provides opportunities for all students to explore issues of cultural diversity, leadership development, and personal identity by helping students to excel academically, obtain professional experience, and establish networks.

Each year CDB sponsors dozens of events and activities, cultural presentations to local businesses and organizations, a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, assists in multi-cultural conference for students in School District 51 and coordinates the Unity Fest celebration. The six clubs making up the CDB are the Black Student Alliance, Gay Straight Alliance, Ho'olokahi Polynesian Club, International Student Association, La Raza, and the Native American Student Council.
