What is an online course?

Thre are three variations of online courses offered through Colorado Mesa University.

Online Classes

  • utilize a course management system or equivalent technology approved for use with student records.
  • allow students to complete course requirements without coming to campus or other pre-determined location.
  • require no fixed schedule. Deadlines must be completed as assigned.
  • allow students to complete their tests/assessments online or in a suitable proctored environment.
  • require students to have good computer and time management skills in order to be successful.

Hybrid (Blended) Classes

  • use BOTH face-to-face and online instructional modes in each class.
  • require students to meet with the instructor face-to-face for 25%-75% of the course contact hours.
  • utilize a course management system or equivalent technology approved for use with student records.
  • schedule both face-to-face (synchronous) and online (asynchronous) times at regularly spaced intervals throughout the semester.
  • require students to have good computer and time management skills in order to be successful.
  • require students to complete their assessments per test/quiz as designated by their instructor.

Web-Enhanced Classes

  • utilize a course management system or equivalent technology approved for use with student records to post grades, syllabus, course outlines, readings, and other instructional content.
  • require students to meet for their scheduled face-to-face (synchronous) class
  • May require students to complete their homework and/or assessments per test/quiz as designated by their instructor.
  • requires students to have good computer skills.

Technical Requirements for Online Students

To have the best learning experience possible in your online course, please be sure you have access to the recommended technology. Colorado Mesa University prefers online students to use the following technology minimums: DSL/Cable modem and high-speed Internet connection, Microsoft Windows XP or later, Microsoft Office 2003 or later, and Java Runtime Environment 7.

Some courses may require specific software and/or hardware not listed here. Be sure to read your syllabus.
