Biography

Steven Schulte, PhD, received his Bachelor of Arts in history and journalism from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and went on to earn his Master of Arts in history from Colorado State University and his PhD in history from the University of Wyoming. A professor of history, Schulte teaches courses in United States History, Introduction to Public History, Environmental History, the American West, Colorado History, American Indian History and American Sport History, among others.

In the classroom, Schulte encourages students to gain practical experience volunteering and doing internships with community groups, city governments and local museums. "The world of history is much broader than the obvious classroom applications that most people think of," he said. Schulte has published a book, Wayne Aspinall and the Shaping of the American West (University Press of Colorado, 2002). He is finishing another book on Colorado's 20th century water wars (expected soon), and has another book under contract dealing with the Western Sioux and their bid for political self-determination in the 20th century. Schulte has authored more than a dozen articles on topics ranging from The Wilderness Act of 1964 to College Football and Civil Rights. He has also published 60 book reviews.

Schulte loves the outdoors of Colorado and the West, and spends a great deal of time hiking and camping. He is also an enthusiastic tennis player.
