Biography

Mayela Vallejos-Ramirez, PhD, received her Bachelor of Arts in English literature and pedagogy from the Universidad de Costa Rica and went on to earn her Master of Arts in Latin American literature and comparative literature from West Virginia University, as well as her PhD in 20th century Latin American literature from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Vallejos-Ramirez teaches variety of courses such as Introduction to Latin American Literature, Introduction to Spanish Literature, History and Culture of Latin America, History and Culture of Spain, Hispanic Prose, Hispanic Poetry, Hispanic Theater, Advanced Composition and Advanced Conversation. She loves to use Facebook, PowerPoints and other media that engage her students in the classes.

Her expertise focuses on women's literature, Costa Rican Literature and Mexican Literature, but Vallejos-Ramirez really specializes in Latin American Literature with an emphasis on women writers. She has published a large number of articles in prestigious journals in Costa Rica, the United States, Colombia, Italy and Spain. She has been a guest speaker at several International and National conferences. She has received the following distinctions: Distinguished Faculty Award, Mesa State College, 2007; Outstanding Achievement in Teaching Award, Mesa State College, 2007. She conducts research on Latin American literature with emphasis on literature written by women, Costa Rican and Mexican literature.
