Biography

G. Suzanne Owens teaches Principles of Financial Accounting, Ethics for Accounting Professionals, Professional Preparation and Audits. Her focus at Colorado Mesa University is to provide excellent instruction in the classroom which is consistent with the focus of CMU as a teaching institution.

As an associate professor in a professional program, she draws upon a decade of experience as an auditor in public accounting at one of the Big Six (now Big Four) accounting firms, Deloitte & Touche, LLP, and private industry accounting at a Fortune 100 company, Sprint Corporation (now Sprint Nextel) as well as her formal education and continuing professional education to bring the best instruction to her students. She is a licensed certified public accountant, which is the goal of most of the students in the public accounting program. Her experience and licensure help her to realistically prepare students to enter the profession.

Owens describes her teaching process as "a learning process in itself". She is constantly searching for ways to improve her courses to make them the best they can be. She takes feedback from students and colleagues very seriously. She doesn't simply change the dates on the syllabi each semester and repeat. Her courses evolve to improve on ideas that worked well in previous courses and change the aspects of the course that weren't as successful based on student feedback or to implement ideas from research and academic conferences. This changing process requires that she stay up-to-date in the field of accounting as well as in teaching methods. For example, in 2013 she attended FLIPCON13 to learn about the concept of flipped learning and then implemented the flipped classroom concept in ACCT 201, Principles of Financial Accounting.

Owens has been published and reviewed in The International Journal of Learning, Proceedings of Mountain Plains Management Conference and Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Economics (reviewer only). She is active at both the department and university-wide level and participates on many committees. She is Chair of the Assessment Committee and serves as the Faculty Coordinator of Assessment.
