Academic Advising

Academic advising is available from two sources: the CMU Faculty and the Advising Center staff. Undeclared students are assigned to the Advising Center. Students who have chosen a major are assigned to a faculty advisor within the area of their major. All students are advised to meet with an advisor each semester before registration. Explore the table below to learn how CMU advisors can assist students in staying on course for graduation.

Visit MAVzone to find out what major you've declared and which advisor you've been assigned to by viewing your Academic Profile located on the Student Academics tab

Academic Advisors can assist students with matching majors to career aspirations as well as evaluating how a student's coursework fits CMU degree programs and General Education Requirements. Advising Center staff can also assist students in identifying their interests by evaluating career and interest assessments. For assistance with determining a major, call the Advising Center to set-up an appointment.

Having a good relationship with your
faculty advisor can be highly beneficial!

Students who have declared a major should seek
the advice of a faculty advisor within the
Academic Department
that houses their major.

The purpose of a faculty advisor is to assist in the process of degree completion. Students are required to have a faculty advisor's signature on their Program Sheet and other graduation paperwork.

It is the student’s responsibility to maintain his/her program sheet and to keep it up-to-date. Advisors are not responsible for failure to meet degree requirements.

Advisor assignments can be found in MAVzone under the Student Academics tab. Students can view their Academic Profile in the top-center column by selecting the current term in the drop-down box at the bottom of the profile and clicking Go. This will cause the current program of study and advisor(s) to appear. Click on the envelope by the advisor's name to email an advisor, or locate an advisor's contact information through the Campus Directory.
